What is SHINE?

SHINE (the Selected Heritage Inventory for Natural England) is a single, nationally consistent dataset of non-designated historic and archaeological features from across England that could benefit from management under Countryside Stewardship and may be unsuitable for certain actions under the Sustainable Farming Incentive.

The SHINE dataset is created and maintained by local authority Historic Environment Records (HERs) and is provided to applicants via an Enviromental Information Map and/or Historic Environment Farm Environment Record (HEFER), along with guidance as to how those features can be enhanced and protected through CS options and SFI actions.

Queries about specific SHINE features should be directed towards the relevant local authority HER.
